Camp Lejeune: A Historic Landmark with a Rich Legacy

By Robin MckenzieJuly 11, 2024 Travel

Have you ever wondered about the significance of Camp Lejeune in American military history? Located in Jacksonville, North Carolina, Camp Lejeune is a prominent United States Marine Corps base with a storied past and an ongoing vital role in national defense. Since its establishment in 1941, Camp Lejeune has been a cornerstone of Marine Corps operations, training thousands of Marines and serving as a crucial hub for military readiness and community support.

The Founding and Evolution of Camp Lejeune

Camp Lejeune was named in honor of Lieutenant General John Archer Lejeune, the 13th Commandant of the Marine Corps. The base’s establishment was driven by the need for an East Coast amphibious training facility during World War II. Over the years, it has expanded to cover nearly 246 square miles and includes various training facilities, housing units, and support services.

The base is home to several important commands, including the II Marine Expeditionary Force, 2nd Marine Division, and 2nd Marine Logistics Group. Its extensive training grounds, which include 11 miles of beach suitable for amphibious operations, make it a premier training site for Marines preparing for deployment.

Environmental and Health Concerns

Despite its strategic importance, Camp Lejeune has faced significant challenges, particularly regarding environmental contamination. From the 1950s through the 1980s, the base’s water supply was contaminated with hazardous chemicals, including trichloroethylene (TCE), perchloroethylene (PCE), benzene, and vinyl chloride. These contaminants were linked to severe health issues among military personnel and their families, including cancers, birth defects, and other chronic diseases.

The contamination led to extensive legal and legislative actions. In 2012, the Honoring America’s Veterans and Caring for Camp Lejeune Families Act was signed into law, providing healthcare to affected veterans and their families. Ongoing remediation efforts aim to address the environmental damage and prevent future contamination.

The Role of Camp Lejeune Today

Today, Camp Lejeune remains an integral part of the Marine Corps’ training and operational readiness. It serves as a vital deployment staging and embarkation site, supporting global military operations. The base continues to adapt to modern military needs, incorporating advanced technologies and training methods to prepare Marines for contemporary warfare challenges.

In addition to its military functions, Camp Lejeune plays a significant role in the local community. It contributes to the regional economy through job creation, infrastructure development, and community partnerships. The base’s commitment to environmental stewardship and community engagement underscores its importance beyond military objectives.

Camp Lejeune’s rich history and ongoing contributions to national security and community well-being highlight its enduring legacy. As we reflect on its past and look towards its future, the significance of Camp Lejeune in shaping the Marine Corps and supporting military families cannot be overstated. Whether through its robust training programs, environmental remediation efforts, or community involvement, Camp Lejeune stands as a testament to resilience, adaptability, and service.
