Fatty liver disease occurs when excess fat builds up in the liver cells, leading to inflammation and potential damage. There are two primary types: non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and alcoholic fatty liver disease (AFLD). NAFLD is more common in seniors, as it’s not related to alcohol consumption but instead tied to factors such as poor diet, lack of exercise, and metabolic disorders.

Sneaky Signs of Fatty Liver Disease

While many people with fatty liver disease don’t experience noticeable symptoms, there are subtle clues your body may be giving that should not be ignored.

1. Unexplained Fatigue

If you’re feeling tired all the time, even after a good night’s sleep, it could be more than just aging. Chronic fatigue is one of the early warning signs of fatty liver disease. The liver plays a key role in metabolizing energy, and when it’s not functioning well, energy levels can plummet.

2. Discomfort or Fullness in the Upper Right Abdomen

People often dismiss abdominal discomfort as part of digestive issues, but persistent pain or a sense of fullness in the upper right side of your abdomen could be a sign that your liver is inflamed or enlarged due to fatty liver disease.

3. Unexplained Weight Loss

While many people aim to manage their weight, sudden, unintentional weight loss can be concerning. This might indicate liver dysfunction, as your body struggles to process fats and nutrients properly.

4. Swelling in the Legs and Ankles

Also known as edema, swelling in your lower extremities may signal an issue with liver function. When the liver is unable to produce the necessary proteins that regulate fluid balance, it can lead to retention of fluid in the legs and ankles.

5. Dark-Colored Urine

A less obvious but sneaky symptom of fatty liver disease is dark or tea-colored urine. This can occur because the liver isn’t properly processing bilirubin, a substance formed from the breakdown of red blood cells.

6. Elevated Blood Sugar Levels

Fatty liver disease is often linked to metabolic disorders, including type 2 diabetes. If you’re a senior who has recently noticed an increase in your blood sugar levels, it may be worth checking your liver health. The relationship between insulin resistance and fatty liver disease can cause a vicious cycle of worsening health.

7. Yellowing of the Skin and Eyes (Jaundice)

Although more commonly associated with advanced liver disease, even mild cases of jaundice—where the skin or eyes take on a yellowish hue—can be an early sign that your liver isn’t functioning properly. Jaundice occurs when the liver can’t effectively filter out toxins and bilirubin builds up in the body.

Risk Factors for Seniors

As we age, our risk for fatty liver disease increases, particularly if we are dealing with other common health issues. There are a few key risk factors that seniors should be aware of.

  • Obesity: Carrying extra weight, especially around the midsection, puts more strain on your liver.
  • Diabetes: Type 2 diabetes is closely linked to fatty liver disease.
  • High Cholesterol and Triglycerides: Elevated fat levels in the blood can contribute to fat buildup in the liver.
  • Sedentary Lifestyle: Lack of regular physical activity can exacerbate many of the risk factors for fatty liver disease.

Preventing and Managing Fatty Liver Disease

The good news is that lifestyle changes can have a significant impact on managing or preventing fatty liver disease. Focusing on a healthy diet rich in fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains is crucial. Regular physical activity, even light exercises like walking or swimming, can help reduce liver fat and improve overall health.

Fatty liver disease may not show itself in obvious ways, but paying attention to subtle signs could make all the difference in maintaining your health.
