Causes of Varicose Veins

Varicose veins occur when the veins become enlarged, dilated, and overfilled with blood. This happens due to weakened or damaged valves within the veins.

Common Causes

  1. Age: As you age, your veins lose elasticity, causing them to stretch. The valves in your veins may weaken, allowing blood that should be moving toward your heart to flow backward.
  2. Pregnancy: During pregnancy, the volume of blood in your body increases, but the flow of blood from your legs to your pelvis decreases. This circulatory change is designed to support the growing fetus but can produce unfortunate side effects—enlarged veins in your legs.
  3. Gender: Women are more likely to develop varicose veins due to hormonal changes during pregnancy, premenstruation, or menopause. Hormone treatments, such as birth control pills, may increase the risk.
  4. Family History: If other family members had varicose veins, there’s a greater chance you will too.
  5. Obesity: Being overweight puts added pressure on your veins.
  6. Standing or Sitting for Long Periods: Your blood doesn’t flow as well if you’re in the same position for long periods.

Symptoms of Varicose Veins

Varicose veins may not cause pain but can be identified by their appearance.

Common Symptoms

  • Dark Purple or Blue Veins: These are visible on the surface of the skin.
  • Twisted and Bulging Veins: They often look like cords and are twisted and bulging.
  • Pain and Discomfort: Symptoms may include an aching pain and discomfort, heavy feeling in the legs, burning, throbbing, muscle cramping, and swelling in your lower legs.
  • Itching and Skin Discoloration: The skin around varicose veins may itch, and there can be changes in color.

Treatment Options for Varicose Veins

Treatment for varicose veins may involve self-care measures or procedures by a healthcare professional.

Self-Care

  • Exercise: Regular exercise can improve circulation and muscle tone, which helps to move blood through the veins.
  • Compression Stockings: Wearing compression stockings all day is often the first approach to try before moving on to other treatments. They steadily squeeze your legs, helping veins and leg muscles move blood more efficiently.
  • Elevate Your Legs: Elevating your legs can help reduce pressure in the veins.

Medical Procedures

  • Sclerotherapy: In this procedure, a solution is injected into small- and medium-sized varicose veins, causing them to scar and close. In a few weeks, treated varicose veins should fade.
  • Laser Treatments: Doctors use new laser technology to close off smaller varicose veins and spider veins. Laser treatment works by sending strong bursts of light onto the vein, which makes the vein slowly fade and disappear.
  • Catheter-Assisted Procedures: This involves inserting a catheter (a thin tube) into the vein, heating the tip of the catheter, and then removing it. The heat destroys the vein by causing it to collapse and seal shut.
  • Vein Stripping and Ligation: This involves tying off a vein before it joins a deep vein and removing the vein through small cuts.
  • Ambulatory Phlebectomy: The doctor removes smaller varicose veins through a series of tiny skin punctures.

Varicose veins can be more than just a cosmetic issue; they can cause significant discomfort and lead to more serious health problems. By understanding the causes and symptoms, and exploring the available treatment options, you can take steps to manage this condition effectively.
